CSCS Cards available to gain site access, if you haven’t achieved a construction related qualification

This card is available to people who frequently visit a construction site, but have no construction specific skill.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environments Tests.

This card is for people who are:

  • working through probationary periods while employers assess their suitability for employment
  • undergoing supervised work experience (aged 16+)

Please note: Provisional cards are only available for those who have never held a CSCS card.

Applicants must have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the past two years.

This card lasts for six months and is not renewable. Before it expires Provisional card holders must achieve or be registered for a recognised construction related qualification and apply for the appropriate CSCS card for their job.

You will need to have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test within the last 2 years.

You can apply for this card if you have completed the 1 day CITB Site safety Plus Health and Safety Awareness Course or other relevant course.

This card is available to workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three).

The card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. It is issued on a temporary basis, while a Construction Related QCF qualification is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher.

You will need to have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test within the last 2 years.

This card is available to people who have commenced on a recognised apprenticeship framework. This card is valid for four years and six months, and cannot be renewed.

You can confirm that you are registered for an apprenticeship using one of the following:

  • A letter from the Managing Agency of your apprenticeship, confirming that you are registered with them
  • A letter from your apprenticeship training provider confirming that you are registered with them
  • Your Apprenticeship Agreement, provided that it shows the occupation and qualification (including pathways) you are registered for.

When applying for this card, you may be exempt from the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test if you have:

  • A letter or email from the Managing Agency of your apprenticeship (which must be clearly identified that they are a Managing Agency), confirming that you have met the Managing Agency’s Health and Safety requirements
  • A certificate for a one day Health and Safety Awareness course
  • A Health and Safety unit included in your induction or initial qualification.

If you have none of the above, then you will need to take the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test before applying for the Apprentice card.

CSCS Cards to gain site access, if you have a construction related qualification

  • You can apply for this card if you have either:
  • Achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 2

OR

  • Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate.

You will need to have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test within the last 2 years.

This card is available if you have either:

  • Achieved a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 3
  • Completed an approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.)
  • Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test. For Advanced Craft occupations you should take the Operative or the Specialist test depending what your occupation is.

This card is available to people who have completed certain construction related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas. There is a list of the qualifications accepted here.

To apply for the card, applicants will need to supply a copy of their qualification and where possible evidence of the units achieved within the qualification.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

CSCS Cards to gain site access, if you are a manager / supervisor

This card is available for supervisor occupations subject to the achievement of a Construction Related Supervisory NVQ or SVQ level 3 or 4

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the Supervisors CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test.

This card is available to Supervisors and Managers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who have not achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 3, 4 or 5 (or construction related QCF NVQ Level 6 or 7) and are not a member of an approved Professional Body.

The card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed. It is issued on a temporary basis, while a Construction related NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction related NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or higher.

All applicants must be registered for the relevant Construction related NVQ or SVQ and have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test within the past two years. For Supervisor occupations you should take the Supervisors test and for Manager occupations you should take the Managers and Professionals test.

This card is available for manager occupations subject to either:

  • Achievement of a Construction related NVQ/SVQ levels 5, 6 or 7 in the relevant construction management level qualification
  • Holding a pre-existing NVQ level 4 in construction management.

This card is valid for five years.

All applicants must pass the CITB Managers and Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test.

Once you have done the above you can apply for a extension on your red card which will last for 1 year until you have completed your NVQ. Once you have completed your NVQ you will receive your Blue Competent Operator Card which lasts for 5 years.
