New Roads and Street works consists of the below 3 categories:

  • New Roads & Street Works for Operatives – (Units 1 – 6 & 9)

  • New Roads & Street Works for Supervisors – (Units 1, 10 -14 & 16)

  • Signing, Lighting & Guarding – Operatives (Unit 2)

  • Signing, Lighting & Guarding – Supervisors (Unit 10)

  • NRSW Requalification Plus – Operatives (Units 1-6 & 9)

  • NRSW Requalification Plus – Supervisors (Units 1, 10-14 & 16)

  • NRSW Requalification Plus – Signing, Lighting & Guarding – Operatives (Unit 2)

  • NRSW Requalification Plus – Signing, Lighting & Guarding – Supervisors (Unit 10)

  • 1 Day Course
    This Signing, Lighting and Guarding course is designed for Operatives and Supervisors who have to erect or monitor the erection of signing, lighting and guarding for work on the roadways and highways. The aim of the Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course is to provide Operatives and Supervisors with the skills and knowledge to perform their respective duties when signing, lighting and guarding to the standards prescribed by City & Guilds and in-line with the NRSW Act, in order to safeguard themselves and others. The Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course content includes:
    • New Roads and Street Works Act.
    • Basic principles of signing, lighting and guarding.
    • Traffic control measures.
    • Practical use of the Code of Practice.
    • Portable traffic lights.
    • Practical use of equipment.
    By the end of the Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course delegates will be able to:
    • Understand the basic principles of the NRSW Act and standards prescribed by City & Guilds.
    • Identify and use correct traffic control measures.
    • Erect and dismantle signing, guarding and lighting safely and in accordance with the supporting Code of Practice.
    • Correctly and confidently operate the equipment used.
    The course contains a high proportion of discussion and simulated assessments supplemented with video and classroom based tutorials and progress tests. Please note, Operatives will be assessed by way of practical tests and oral questioning and Supervisors by written assignments and observation exercises. A training group may contain Operatives, a minimum of 2 Operatives must be available for Supervisors to carry out observation exercises for monitoring signing, lighting and guarding activities, thus enabling the most effective development of these candidates. Upon successful completion of the Signing, Lighting and Guarding training delegates will receive City & Guilds unit accreditation by way of a certificate. Delegates should provide a passport photograph on the day of training for production of SWQR Cards. Delegates should inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course.
  • 5 Day Course
    The NRSWA training course is designed for Supervisors who are required to monitor Operatives performing excavation, backfill and reinstatement duties. The NRSWA training course aims to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform Supervisor duties to the standards prescribed by City & Guilds in-line with the NRSW Act 1991, in order to safeguard themselves and others. The NRSWA training course content includes:
    • Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
    • Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding.
    • Monitoring excavation in the highway.
    • Monitoring reinstatement of compaction and backfill materials.
    • Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
    • Monitoring reinstatement of bituminous materials.
    • Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs.
    • Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.
    By the end of the NRSWA course delegates will be able to:
    • Summarise the requirements of the current NRSW Act.
    • Select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities.
    • Monitor duties performed by Operatives for each unit and/or qualification as prescribed by City & Guilds. Standards in-line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable.
    • Provide a safe working environment for themselves and others.
    A high proportion of practical exercises and simulated assessments will be supplemented with video and classroom based tutorials. Supervisors have to demonstrate the ability to monitor a site and compile written reports in order to successfully complete the course. A training group may contain a mix of both Supervisors and Operatives; however, a minimum of 2 Operatives must be available for Supervisors to carry out monitoring exercises, thus enabling the most effective development of these candidates. There are 8 units for Supervisors and a separate certificate is issued for each. In addition, various combinations of the units will lead to a full Street Works qualification for which an SWQR card will be awarded. Delegates should provide a passport photograph on the day of training for production of SWQR Cards. Delegates should inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course.
  • 2 Day Course
    This New Roads and Street Works (NRSW) Requalification Plus course is designed for Operatives that are registered with the Street Works Qualification Register and wish to renew their NRSWA qualification but also require exam preparation and refresher training. The NRSW Requalification Plus Training course content includes: Day 1: Delegates will receive rigorous theory based training and exam preparation designed specifically around the NRSWA Requalification assessment. Day 2: Delegates will have to sit six written multiple choice exam papers throughout the day under strict exam conditions. Each exam paper must be completed within a strict 30 minute timeframe. Standard Operative Qualifications:
    • Location of Underground Services (Unit 1).
    • Signing, Lighting & Guarding (Unit 2).
    • Excavation - Operatives (Unit 3).
    • Reinstatement - Bottom Half - Operatives (Unit 4).
    • Reinstatement - Top Half - Operatives - (Unit 5).
    • Bituminous Material - Cold - Operatives (Unit 6).
    • Modular Pavement - Operatives (Unit 9).
    Delegates should inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course. IMPORTANT! City & Guilds have not produced any revision material for the NRSWA Requalification but with this course you will not need any. In total there are 7 units for Supervisors. If you wish to add additional units, the additional units are charged at £25 VAT per person, per unit. City and Guilds give all NRSW card holders a six month grace period to take their requalification assessment. However, we will be unable to take any bookings for delegates who want to attend a course where the course start date is within six weeks of the grace period expiry (not card expiry), due to the time that it takes the accrediting body to process the requalification. Delegates need to provide a passport photograph and on the day of training for production of SWQR Cards as well as Photo ID, either the SWQR card, passport or driving licence.
  • 5 Day Course
    The New Roads & Street Works training programme is designed for Operatives who carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement of various materials for undertaking street works. This NRSWA training course provides delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform operative duties to the standards prescribed by City & Guilds in-line with the current New Roads and Street Works (NRSWA) Act, in order to safeguard themselves and others. The NRSWA training course content includes: 
    • Location of underground apparatus.
    • Signing, lighting and guarding.
    • Excavation in the highway.
    • Reinstatement of compaction and backfill materials.
    • Reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
    • Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials.
    • Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials.
    • Reinstatement of concrete slabs.
    • Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.
    By the end of the NRSWA training course delegates will be able to: Summarise the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works (NRSW) Act. Select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities. Perform duties of each unit and/or qualification as prescribed by City & Guilds standards in-line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable. Provide a safe working environment for themselves and others. The course includes a high proportion of group exercises with continuous oral and practical assessments, supplemented with video and classroom based tutorials. A NRSWA training group may contain a mix of both Operatives and Supervisors. Sessions will be varied within the overall framework to allow the most effective development of the candidate. There are 9 units for Operatives and a separate certificate is issued for each. In addition, various combinations of the units will lead to a full Street Works qualification, for which a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) Card will be awarded. Delegates should provide a passport photograph on the day of training for production of SWQR Cards. Delegates should inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course.
  • 1 Day Course
